Welcome back to our 2024 poll. Yesterday we revealed the winner, Bertand Bonello’s The Beast. When informed of this great honour, I am told that Mr Bonello merely blew vape smoke in the face of his assistant by way of expressing his displeasure.
Bellow, you will find the individual ballots for the poll, including ‘discoveries’ - best films new to us. This is a veritable feast of films to add to your watchlist. Our thanks to everyone who contributed.
Our thanks, too, to everyone who signed up in the first 24 hours of the Substack going live! If you haven’t subscribed yet, there’s still time. We will be back next week with a very exciting interview that you won’t want to miss. Until then, enjoy the ballots.

6TILL6 (Arran Ashan & Mustafa Mohamoud)
If someone tells you British film is dead, put this on to shut them up. The concept of filming around London for 24 hours straight to explore the stories of everyday people combats the myopic reality we're often fed about the city.
Unfrosted (Jerry Seinfeld)
Lost in the shadow of Seinfeld's current turn as a political puppet. It's not just his politics that place him out of step in the world; his honed comedic instincts lean into the rapid-fire gags, so frequent they almost become verbal tics. A world away from 'vibes' comedy of late, this film is determined to make you laugh with the whiff of American exceptionalism just being a bonus.
www.RachelOrmont.com (Peter Vack)
A journey into the modern lust for attention. Is it dystopian or merely reflective of our own inner id becoming conjoined to the hellscape of the internet?
In Water (Hong Sang-soo)
The truest paen to no-budget indie filmmakers capturing the beautiful in the mundane
film01 ( angelicism01)
A film for editors. Captures the frenetic energy of the online world, starting as dual tik toks it reaches a mantra and becomes transcendental.
I Saw the TV Glow 2024 (Jane Schoenbrun)
Subtle and sad, Schoebrun’s film has planted a seed that will bloom for the next generation.
Rap World (Conner O’Malley, Danny Scharar)
A film for the bois. All those who've lived it will watch from between their fingers and mouthing every white boi rap verse.
"She Is Conann (Bertrand Mandico)
Odd in the way films need to be allowed to be, mixing epic fantasy lore with Berlin art satire. I could watch hours of this.
The All Golden (Nate Wilson)
Wilson sees visions that I don't know if the world is ready for, if you're daring to indulge in a new cinematic language then the All Golden will truly speak to you.
Samsara (Lois Patiño)
A breath of serenity. Samsara delivers a visual bath of wonders and recenters the filmmaking, giving breath in every frame.
Discoveries
The Work 2017 (Jairus McLeary, Gethin Aldous)
A man's emotions can live inside his head all his life, this documentary captures what happens when he reaches the crossroad between turmoil and salvation. "
Revolution+1 (Masao Adachi)
The audacity of filming and then releasing a biopic of the Shinzo Abe assassin within a year of his death! The film's urgency puts to rest any complaints of amateurism, which only service the stark reality of the world it captures.
Letters to the Postman (Felix Dembinski)
One of the UK's emerging directors, you have to message Felix directly to see this masterful take on the ghost story. But it's definitely worth it.
Macabre Metrics (William North)
Another one to watch. The London based director is on a Korean jaunt, bringing us a freewheeling satire on tik tok influencers mixed with his limitless visual imagination running wild. There's a section with Ai that made me a convert, drooling at the possibilities."
Vidocq 2001 (Pitof)
This pulpy French romp is a vulgar auteur gem, giving Pitof free rein to visually throw everything into the mix, it may not always be pretty but you'll never forget the experience.
Punctured Sky (Jon Rafman)
Rafman speaks to an unexpressed loneliness we all feel, though this lives on a creepypasta foundation, he elevates the medium to a deeper resonance."
Pierre or The Ambiguities (Leos Carax)
Pola X as it's meant to be seen. Gives so much more meat to the bones we initially got. Brings a novelistic depth with the twists of a serial.
Feeling My Way (Jonathan Hodgson)
Proof that England made contemplative experimental cinema. Wherever Hodgson is right now, we need you back!
Torque (Joseph Kahn)
How this slipped through the net, I'll never know. A self aware biker movie that drenches you in the most hyper action that ever was. One minute of this film would blow everything else out of the water.
Love ’47 (Wolfgang Liebeneiner)
A nation struggling to make sense of its recent past, forces two strangers together. It's a classic tale through a new perspective. A film to make you feel.

For a guy who is losing his sight, this film looked pretty good. Consistently finding much inspiration in Hong Sang-soo’s one-man-band productions. Kill the catering.
It’s Not Me (C'est pas moi, 2024), Dir: Leos Carax
No, of course not. It’s a riff of Godard. However, Leos is channelling Godard as if he had a Gold membership on 4chan.

A contemplative post-kaiju disaster movie in the spirit of Tarkovsky. Quiet, poetic, and subtly epic.
